Striving to offer prayers on the auspicious day, thousands of Hindu devotees were also witnessed waiting outside Jageshwar temple in Purana Kanpur area, Vankhandeshwar temple, Siddhnath temple in Jajmau and Shivalaya.
The temples were beautifully decorated with flowers, and priests offered special prayers and 'rudrabhishek' to please the Lord Shiva. Devotees, including women started reaching the temples from early morning hours to worship, owing to which tight security arrangements were made at the Shiva temples to control the rush.
"'Shrawan', the fifth month of the Hindu calendar, has a special religious and cultural significance. During 'Shrawan', festivals like Nagpanchami, Gokulashtami, Narali Purnima and Raksha Bandhan are celebrated. Besides, each day of the week, barring Wednesdays in most cases, is dedicated to a god or goddess," said Sunita Mishra, a devotee.
"It is believed that the worship of Lord Shiva during 'Shrawan' month is 108 times more powerful than worshipping during normal days. Some devotees read the Shiva Purana on these days, while many chant Maha Mritunjaya mantra or 'Om Namah Shivaya'," said another devotee.
'Shrawan' month festivals also include Mangala Gauri puja, which is observed on Tuesdays. These days are dedicated to Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva.
